How can we define the discipline of Anthropology? 🌍

The discipline of Anthropology can be defined as the study of humankind and what it truly means to be a part of this group known as homo sapiens (Smith E. et al. 2023) and how we evolved to get to this point in existence.


More deeply, what the discipline of anthropology means is not only to explore what it means for us to be humans, but to explore these traits and how we can use this knowledge from investigations to make the world a more inclusive and connected society for us to live and evolve in.

Amongst my travels in the city of Dubrovnik, there was an abandoned room on the side of the street and in this room was a painting of a set of hands holding a bunch of daffodils. 


For me, this symbolised hope and showed how amongst something chaotic or challenging, there is always the hope of a new beginning and evolvement. 


This can be compared to the evolution of the human race as throughout our evolvement, humanity has faced many challenges, which anthropologists study, but the human trait of hope of evolvement has always remained. 








This highlights the true meaning of anthropology as it shows what it means to be human and how we have adapted to take difficult situations and find something beautiful within it and evolve from this. 


For me, this is a significant aspect of what anthropology means and how we study human societies and their developments and how throughout this research into the human race, we become witness to the differences of each society and how each of us all carry traits which makes us all human.

This shows us the development of human eating and is commonly known for heavy chewing. (Smithsonian. 2022). Due to the different development of the face to previous hominins, this meant that the Paranthropus boisei developed to have larger teeth, four times bigger than humans today, due to their larger cheek bones.
